Dock Line Materials

• Nylon (3-Strand & Double Braid): The most popular choice for dock lines. Nylon stretches under load, absorbing shock from waves, wakes, and tidal surge — protecting both your boat and the dock cleats. 3-strand is easy to splice; double braid is stronger and more abrasion-resistant.
• Polyester: Low stretch, high strength, and excellent UV resistance. Better suited for situations where minimal stretch is desired, such as spring lines or permanent moorings.
• Polypropylene: Lightweight and floats on water — useful for dinghy painters and situations where a floating line is needed. Less UV-resistant than nylon or polyester.

Choosing the Right Size

• Diameter: Match line diameter to your boat's cleat size and load. A general rule: 1/8" of diameter per 9 ft of boat length (e.g., 3/8" for a 27 ft boat, 1/2" for a 36 ft boat).
• Length: Bow and stern lines should be at least 2/3 the length of your boat. Spring lines should equal the boat's full length.
• Eye Splices: Pre-spliced eyes make docking faster and easier. Look for reinforced thimbles on lines used with shackles or rings.
